Precedent and procedure of the High Sheriff

Hello Everyone! I once again require the help of the wonderful Naco Heads!

For our civic event, we are having in attendance for the first time (in my era anyway), a High Sheriff. The only other dignitaries we have of their calibre are Lord Lieutenants and Lord Mayors. However, I can’t seem to find process and protocol for them. Does anyone have any documentation? I was going to follow Lord Mayor procedure but if there is something more specific, I would love to get it right.

If you go to Civic Ceremonial 5th Edition, Paul Millward - National Association of Civic Officers on our resources page have a look at pages 36/37 as they relate to the High Sheriff in order of precedence.

Hi - we had occasion to refer to the book last year for our Citizenship Ceremonies, where we were fortunate and continue to be lucky on a monthly basis to have the High Sheriff and a Deputy Lieutenace in attendance. We have had a few DLs who have questioned the precedence but we have the red book to hand and any issues disappear immediately, might not be the This is Your Life big red book but it certainly makes our lives easier. Hope it works for you.
